Both soda and sparkling water are popular drinks on the market today. The recent invention of personal soda vending machines has made it possible for people to easily produce sparkling and carbonated water at home, saving them the trip to the grocery store. Probably the most famous of these devices is the SodaStream, which has received celebrity approval since its first introduction in the early 2000s. However, as soon as a new idea enters the market, competition usually arises. One of SodaStream’s main competitors was DrinkMate, and the debate about the best brand began.
As carbonated machines, SodaStream and DrinkMate’s greatest attraction is its ability to produce carbonated and carbonated water in the comfort of your own home. With SodaStream, the company sells a variety of syrups that can be added to water to add flavor to the drink. The flavors range from different types of soft drinks to fruity aromas such as lemon, watermelon, mango, orange and others. However, DrinkMate advertises its device that can carbonate not only water, but also other drinks. From iced tea to coffee, energy drinks and even alcohol, DrinkMate offers more carbonated options than SodaStream, preventing users from trying to carbonate anything other than water.
The two machines are very similar, although there are differences in design. The SodaStream One Touch measures 6 x 10.8 x 17.3 inches and uses a one litre bottle. The machine has a thin base with a wider top allowing the user to cut the bottle directly into the machine. The One Touch is available in two colours, black and white. The DrinkMate measures 8 x 5 x 16 inches and is therefore thinner and slightly shorter than the One Touch. The DrinkMate also uses a one-litre bottle and the device itself has a thinner bottom and lid than the SodaStream. This creates space for a sparkling drip that attaches itself to the bottle. DrinkMate is available in three colours: black, white and red.
When it comes to work, SodaStream simplifies the process. With the SodaStream One Touch Electric, all the user has to do is insert the bottle before selecting the bubble level. The One Touch has three buttons on the top that indicate the desired amount of carbon dioxide, and once the bottle is in place, the user can press any button and sit down. With DrinkMate, the process is more complex. The user must first attach a sparkling drip to the bottle in order to attach it to the DrinkMate. To obtain a different amount of carbonation, you need to take several turns instead of clicking a specific button. The installation of the carbonate bottle is very similar for both brands. After removing the rear plate of the machine, the carbon cylinder is screwed into the exhaust valve.

Cleaning with the DrinkMate is very easy, because the bubbling infusion itself prevents blistering and spilling. When everything is ready, all you have to do is clean the bottle itself and the infusion of the sparkling wine. At SodaStream the machine has no overflow protection, which increases the chance of an overflow. This results in greater cleanliness, because not only the bottle has to be cleaned, but also the countertop around the machine.
As far as the price is concerned, the difference is very small, although the groups themselves have variations. SodaStream One Touch is available online for $119.99 and the starter kit includes the device, a 60 liter soda bottle, a 1 liter bottle, free shipping and a 3 year warranty. DrinkMate sells for $114.99 on their website, and their starter kit includes a vending machine, a 10 liter starter carbonator, a 1 liter bottle, a sparkling infusion and a 2 year warranty. Compared to the One Touch, this set offers a much smaller carbonate cylinder, no free shipping and a shorter warranty.
However, if we look at the long-term costs, there is a big difference. DrinkMate offers 2 packs of 60 litre gas bottles for $68.99. SodaStream offers a unique carbonate refill for only $29.99, but also offers a gas exchange program. If the old bottle is returned, the company charges only $14.99 per new bottle and provides a UPS incident label to return the empty bottle. This means that in a year’s time, if someone uses a bottle a month, he or she will have to pay more than $400 to DrinkMate for new bottles. On the other hand, by exchanging SodaStream, a person would pay less than $200 for the same delivery. However, as both machines can contain a 60 litre bottle, it is possible to use soda bottles with the DrinkMate machine. This saves DrinkMate users more than half of their annual costs.
Both SodaStream and Drinkmate have been reviewed by several publications and the results are generally positive for both brands. The Wirecutter article chose SodaStream as overall winner, but also praised DrinkMate’s ability to carbonate drinks other than flavoured water. The strategist also gave positive feedback on both companies, emphasizing DrinkMate’s flexibility and budget compliance. The reviewer praised the reliability of SodaStream and recommended it for maximum effervescence with minimum effort.
Feedback from users is also very positive for both products. The SodaStream website contains a large number of comments from customers who can describe their personal experience with the brand. One of the users wrote: I love the lightness and taste of Sodastream! It’s the best purchase I’ve ever made since I started drinking sparkling water all the time. I save money and time, and I never have to worry about running out of water. It’s the greatest invention! SodaStream One Touch is also sold by Amazon, where it receives 4.3 out of 5 reviews and 71% of reviews have 5 stars. The official DrinkMate website has only one rating, but that one is positive. The user wrote: Better than soda straw in sparkling whiskey… DrinkMate also sells its products on Amazon, where it stands 4.2 out of 5. Of the critics, 68% are five-star critics.
In terms of long-term value, user-friendliness and feedback, SodaStream always seems to be the preferred choice. But for those looking for a device that can do more, the DrinkMate is a serious contender. Through the years and the innovations of both companies, we can observe even more changes in the personal carbonation industry and the possibilities of these products.
